Chapter 6 Interactive component

6.2 Explain

There are three parts in our iteractive plot, a heatmap, a pie chart telling about the crime category and 3 barplots describing suspect profile. The interaction is embodied in two ways: 1. when we move the mouse on a specific precinct area on the heatmap, a tipsbar will show and the pie chart and barplots will change accordingly to this precinct. 2. when we click on a division of pie chart, that part will be highlighted and the heatmap with the barplot will change accordingly. Besides we set up a reset button to turn everything back to the initial state.

6.3 Insights

In the interactive graph we can tell that the distribution of different types of crime differ in each precinct. For example, it’s seen that property crime(THEFT) is more likely to happen in the mid-town area, violent crime such as MURDER and ASSAULT are more likely to happen in Queen or Harlem. Also, we also get the information about suspect’s profile of different crimes.
